The Orbea Avant M20D was the first disc brake road bike we got to review here at Glory and it managed to change how we think about road bikes. Whats the special sauce?

Orbea present the Avant as a do it all road bike for the way we ride now. We could not agree more. The Avant is light and stiff and rides in every way like a mid range road bike should. It’s geometry is forgiving and it makes for a predictable ride. It has a tall headtube a really short reach allowing anyone who does not think of themselves as a racer to set the bike up just right.

Not a single feature of the Avant is lacking. Tapered fork, press fit BB, internal cables, great disc brake mounts, 27.2 seatpost. Then there are the extras that make it stand out. Wider tire clearance, the ability to run disc or rim brakes, the ability to mount fenders. Not only practical and versatile but also refined in the wind-tunnel, Orbea suggest the Avant has the full benefits of their Pro Tour race machines. It’s at this point the Avant starts to change the way we think about road bikes and it gives us a glimpse of the future. One bike that does it all without compromise and with enhanced safety and comfort at a very reasonable price. If you own a traditional road bike and want to get a toe in the water with disc brakes and gravel riding but also want to maybe commute then the Orbea Avant if how you get this all done in one click of the button.

Don’t mistake the Avant for an all out race bike. It’s a little heavy and it’s geometry not going to work for a 25mph + drag race. If you already have such a bike then you might consider the Avant to be the bike that does everything else.
Available as a disc bike or regular rim brake version and with a variety of builds or as a frame set there are no limits to the way the Avant can be set up.

  1. I bought one before seeing this review. remarks are accurate. Although not the lightest carbon frame around, the added stiffness gives great power transfer. Mine has Vision Team 30 wheels which I find fast compared to previous wheels I've tried. The bike definitely rewards me for effort. My ride avg speed has gone up by at least 1 mph compared to my previous bikes. Oh…. and the Hydraulic brakes are lovely. Great feel and modulation and they release fully and don't drag like mechanical discs often do.
